Continental cross young bulls: light to 92.5p (71.6p); medium to 99.5p (85.0p); heavy to 103.5p (82.2p). Other young bulls: light to 81.5p (64.2p); medium to 90.5p (65.5p); heavy to 83.5p (69.6p).

Lambs: Standard to 83.6p (66.8p); medium to 109.8p (73.8p); heavy to 106.8p (75.2p); overweight to 106.3p (79.3p). Ewes: Light to £17.60 (£14.00); heavy to £38.20 (£28.60). Pigs: Porkers to 70.5p (42.7p); cutters to 76.5p (53.3p); baconers to 58.5p (52.5p). Prime sows to 27.6p (21.5p).

At their Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 19th October, Harrison and Hetherington Limited held their weekly primestock market when they had forward 812 cattle (including 213 young bulls); 2,648 sheep (707 ewes and rams) and 131 pigs (24 sows and boars).

At Borderway on Monday 670 prime cattle were sold including 213 young bulls. The prime cattle sold to a top price of 119.5p per kilo for a Limousin cross heifer from RW & G Dickinson, High Knipe, Askham purchased by S Bowman, Butcher, Corby Hill. A Belgian Blue cross from High Knipe sold for 114.5p per kilo to D Nattrass, Butcher, The Market, Carlisle. A Limousin cross from P Richardson, Sandhills, Bassenthwaie Lake sold for 111.5p to Messrs Haighs, Butcher, Workington. The other leading prices for heifers were as follows, 109.5p Keskadale & Edenhall Grange, 108.5p Highside & Hgih House, 106.5p Camp Farm & Keskadale and 104.5p Lowther Park & Midtown.

The top price for steers of 105.5p was paid for a Limousin cross from W H & D A Gass, Nunsceugh House, Roweltown purchased by Woodhead Brothers, Colne. This was followed at 103.5p for a Aberdeen Angus cross from J B C Read, Midtown, Burgh by Sands purchased by C Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Simmental crosses from Brisco Hall sold for 99.5p to Highlands Meats, Saltcoats. Another Limousin cross from P Richardson, Sandhills also sold for 99.5p to J Cranston, Butcher, Kirkoswald. Galloway bullocks from G & MP Forrester, Skipby, Kirklinton sold for 97.5p to A Elliot, Butcher, Newcastleton.

The prime bulls sold to 103.5p & 102.5p both consigned by J R Case, Newclose Bungalow, Stank purchased by Woodhead Brothers, R P Winder, Blackpool and Rose County Meats.

The averages for the premium cattle were as follows hiefers 100.2p, steers 91.5p and young bulls 94.3p.

A smaller show of prime lambs were presented to a good attendance of buyers. All classes were slightly easier on the week with well fleshed lambs been keenly bid for. Beltex crosses from B A & AM Storrw & Son, Willimoteswick Farm, Bardon Mill realised the top price 109.8p per kilo and top price per head of £57.40 for a Texel cross from J G Miller, Smithy Garth, Penrith. Natrass, Butcher, The Martket, Carlisle. Cutter pigs from the same

conignment sold for 70.5p and 68.5p to G Thornton, Butcher, Wigton and

Messrs Hiahgs, Butcher, Workington. Baconers from R McBride & Son, Stenries

Farm, Carrutherstown sold for 64.5p to Messrs Haighs. Others from Parton

Farm sold for 63.5p also to Messrs Haighs. The sows were also dearer with

the top price fo 28p per kilo and £60 for one from T Irving & Son, Blackwell

Hall, Blackwell.

At their Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Friday, 16th October, Harrison and Hetherington Limited held their weekly dairy sale when they had forward 95 head, comprising 25 cows, 68 heifers and 2 in calf heifers.

Mixed quality Dairy cattle were forward in similar numbers. Good quality types sold to exceed last weeks trade while poorer sorts were still difficult to cash.

Harrison and Hetherington Limited held their weekly sale of store and breeding sheep when 3,544 sheep were on offer with few exceptions quality was lacking and taking this into consideration most classes met a sharper enquiry.
