At their Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 17th August, Harrison and
Hetherington Limited held their weekly primestock market when they had

The top price of the sale was 129.5p per kilo for a Belgian Blue cross
heifer consigned by J Dent & Son, Elm House, Bolton purchased by J Cranston,
Butcher, Kirkoswald. A Blonde d¹Aquitaine cross heifer from W L Musgrave &
Sons, Cardew Hall, Dalston sold for 119.5p was also purchased by J Cranston.
Two Blonde d¹Aquitaine crosses consigned from W Gill, Newlands, Ireby sold
for 115.5p and 114.5p purchased by Northan Counties and Cumbria Meats. A
Limousin cross consigned by E I Coulthard, Brisco Hall sold for 112.5p to
Messrs Haighs, Butchers, Workington.

The top price for a steer of 123.5p was for a Limousin cross from K A Clark,
West Farm, Newtown purchased by S Bowman, Butcher, Corby Hill. Charolais
crosses sold to 107.5p for one from Mr McGilivray, Edenglass, Scotby to
Woodhead Bros, Colne. Aberdeen Angus cross consigned by Messrs Robinson,
Gelt Hall Farm, Castle Carrock and purchased by C Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.
Other prices were 106.5p Wallshead & Middle Farm, 105.5p Oughterside, Brisco
Hall and Manor Farm.

The bulls sold to a top price of 123.5p for a Belgian Blue cross from Messrs
Mitchell, Kell Springs, Sebergham and was purchased by Mr D Nattrass,
Butcher, Carlisle. A Limousin cross from B Irving, Harperhill, Roweltown
sold for 119.5p to Winder, Blackpool. A Piemontese cross from Messrs Watson,
Barrow House sold for 118.5p to Messrs Winder. Another Limousin cross from
Bleng Farms, Mill House sold for 117.5p to Mr Winder, Blackpool. A Belgian
Blue cross from West Trailtrow sold at 114.5p with 111.5p Low Buildings.

The averages for the premium cattle were as follows heifers 103.5p, young
bulls 100.2p and steers 98.2p.

Harrison and Hetherington Limited held their prime lamb show. The judge Mr S
Stoddart found his champion pen shown by Messrs Wales, Thackwood, Raughton
Head, Carlisle they realized 111.4p per kilo and selling to Mr D Natress,
The Market, Carlisle. The reserve pen also came from Messrs Wales and
realised £43.90.

A smaller show of prime sheep was presented to a good attendanceof buyers.
As with the national trend all classes were easier on the week. However
lambs carrying flesh were again easier to sell. Texel crosses from T C
Whitefold, Tercrosset Farm, West Hall, Brampton realised the top price per
kilo 112.7p and to a top price per head of £50.10 for a Texel cross from D M
Dickinson, Greenburn Farm, Canonbie. Ewes were forward in similar numbers to
last week, prices obtained were similar to that of last week. Prime lambs:

Workington. The sows were dearer with the top price of £75 from Birchwood,
Netherburn and Greengill. Boars to £71 from Haighs Mains.

At their Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday, 17th August, Harrison and
Hetherington Limited held their weekly sale of stirks and young stores when
they had forward 563 head. Stirks and young stores were more numerous and
with few exceptions the quality of cattle on offer was not as good and
taking this into consideration a mixed trade prevailed with only the better
quality animals selling well.

DAIRY SALE
Friday, 14th August, 1998

At their Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Friday, 14th August, Harrison and
Hetherington Limited held their weekly dairy sale when they had forward 76
head, comprising 16 cows and 60 heifers.

Dairy cattle were forward in less numbers with quality being better on the
week with trade rather sharper.
Calved cows averaged £535.71 and calved heifers averaged £656.59.

SPECIAL SHEEP SALES
14th AUGUST, 1998

At their Borderway Mart, Carlisle on 14th August, Harrison & Hetherington
Limited held their annual ŒAugust Fair¹ sheep sale when they presented 4,494
head, comprising 2,822 breeding ewes and shearling gimmers, 1,549 feeding
lambs and 110 rams.

A good show of breeding ewes was presented to a large company of buyers
drawn from a wide area. Condition of ewes was lacking on previous years and
prices took a drop on the year especially on the younger type of ewes. Top
price of £92 a piece was achieved for a pen of Texel cross shearling gimmers
presented by Messrs GG & MA Harrison of Sceugh Farm, Southwaite, Carlisle.

A nice selection of feeding lambs was presented to a good company of buyers.
Trade was again brisk and in keeping with recent trends, selling to £36.50
for Suffolk crosses from Messrs J Clark & Sons of High Moor Dyke,
Hesket-new-Market, Wigton. In the ram section a mixed show of tups were
forward. A larger ringside of buyers were selective with their purchases,
with only better quality sorts of ramas being keenly bid for. Breeding Sheep

At their Borderway Mart on Friday 14th August Harrison and Hetherington
Limited held their eighth annual show and sale of pedigree Beltex sheep when
they presented a catalogued entry of 594 head. A packed ringside of
customers attended the sale, bidding was keen throughout with many lots
selling over 1,000gns and vendors experiencing a pleasing trade.

Topping the days trading at 8,000gns was supreme champion "V/D Drie
Musschen" a Belgian bred shearling ram, by Tonus. This very well presented
ram from the Balig flock of John McIlwraith sold to a consortium of breeders
namely J & D Milne, Oldwhat Mains, New Deer, Turriff, Springbox Management
Ltd, Corstane, Biggar, Mrs M Dunlop, Corstane, Biggar and T Allan,
Burghmuir, Biggar. Next at 2,800gns was another shearling "Longley Artisan"
by Hawthwaite Lane Vintage Lao, exhibited by K & A McCarthy, Mossbank Farm,
Ballycreely he travels to Caithness to join the flock of W Oag at Brims
Mains. The noted "Downkillybegs Ultimo" a 1995 son of Penywern Quintin,
consigned by JL McMillan, Carse of Clary, Newton Stewart sold to J Marshall
Farms Ltd, Lamberhurst, Tunbridge Wells for 2,200gns. Mervin Currie
travelled from Ballymena, Northern Ireland to judge the pre sale show and he
presented the female championship to TJ Carson¹s home bred shearling gimmer
"Downkillybegs Angel" , who has many show successes to her credit, the top
priced female she sold for 2,100gns to fellow Irish breeder G Allen,
Portadown. Averages: 13 aged ram £775.38 (plus £193.94); 173 shearling rams
£589.21 (minus £136.22); 109 lamb rams £409.69 (minus £33.21); 20 ewes
£296.63 (plus £41.63); 91 shearling gimmers £505.38 (plus £1.04); 36 ewe

Hetherington Limited presented 39 tonnes of hay and 131 tonnes of straw a
comprising 170 tonnes. New season good quality hay from £62 to £70 (£67.18)
per tonne; new season medium quality seed hay from £42 to £50 (£46.33) per
tonne; new season good quality barley feeding straw from £47 to £62 (£52.36)
per tonne; new season wheat straw from £43 per tonne.
